The Free Lance-Star Publishing Co., a 128-year-old, family-owned market leader in print, digital and broadcasting located in historic Fredericksburg, Va. is looking for an Executive Editor with extensive leadership experience and strategic vision to lead our newsroom.  

The ideal candidate will create a culture of innovation guided by a tradition of journalistic integrity. He or she will develop a nimble team able to meet the needs of diverse audiences, shifts in technology and a changing marketplace.


  • Direct and oversee news and editorial content in both print and digital products in a fast paced, deadline oriented environment.
  • Maintain the highest journalism standards across digital and print platforms
  • Provide leadership and guidance to all news teams in both print and digital
  • Supervise and assist print and digital managing editors in daily news operations
  • Plan and administer an annual budget
  • Serve as liaison with general public representing The Free Lance-Star Co. to facilitate strong community and civic connections
  • Serve as a member of the editorial board and Publisher’s Advisory Committee


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, masters degree preferred;
  • Minimum five years experience in newsroom leadership.
  • Experience in print news and digital news operations
