Special Sections Editor, Gannett Custom Media


Gannett Custom Media seeks a motivated, creative editor to help produce special weekly newsprint sections for Gannett’s community newspapers.


This editor will oversee production of weekly editorial shopping sections (filled with fashion, home and food content) and weekly autos and jobs editorial packages. The editor will work with freelance writers and also gather content from Gannett news organizations for use in the sections. Ability to plan content, edit copy, write eye-catching headlines, work well with designers and freelancers, and pay attention to detail are all required. Effective communication skills, a positive attitude and an interest in learning new things are also key.


Occasional work on additional special content projects may also be required.


This is an important position, with much responsibility, so we are looking for a candidate with the right mix of skills and passion, someone who can help us as we continually strive to improve our products.


This job is based at Gannett/USA TODAY headquarters in suburban Washington, D.C. Local candidates will be given strong preference.



? Help conceptualize content for special sections

? Assign content / work with freelance writers

? Edit copy thoroughly for substance, structure, tone, style, spelling and grammar

? Maintain high-quality work while meeting deadlines

? Fact-check content / proofread pages

? Collaborate with designers

? Help source photos and other images for presentation

? Help manage projects

? Perform other duties as necessary to help Gannett’s custom media team achieve its goals



? College degree

? At least three years’ experience in editing for newspaper, magazine, website or similar organization.

? Digital skills a plus

? Collaborative team-player

? Creativity and pride in developing the best possible product
