Description:

Seeking staff writer to cover Lafourche Parish government .

We're looking for someone with enterprise and talent to write both breaking news and in-depth stories. Qualified job applicants will have a strong hard-news background and the ability to dig for hard-hitting stories, root out corruption and other problems and write about solutions.

You must possess the ability to think critically and take on the tough stories while maintaining professionalism. A sense of humor is a must, as is the ability to learn how to spell names like Boudreaux and Thibodaux. For this beat, we're looking for someone eager to not just report on the mechanics of local government, but also to tell the stories of those affected by officials’ decisions.

Feature writers need not apply.

Tasks will also include shooting and editing videos and posting elements, such as breaking news, to our websites.

The Daily Comet Newspaper, a 9,000 circulation paper published six days per week, is consistently recognized for its quality journalism. Its sister paper, The (Houma) Courier has earned Newspaper of the Year honors from the Louisiana Press Association for most of the past decade.

Candidates must have a four-year college degree. Previous experience at a daily newspaper preferred. The Daily Comet, a part of the Halifax Media Group, offers excellent benefits and is situated in a vibrant, unique community with Cajun roots about an hour southwest of New Orleans.

You'll work flexible hours dictated often by news events and our need to respond quickly and effectively.

You can apply online at houmatoday.com or dailycomet.com website and scroll down to "Work For Us." You can also send resumes and at least five samples of your writing, preferably on the topic of education to Karen Dauzat, Human Resource Director, PO BOX 2717, Houma, LA 70361. You can also e-mail your information to karen.dauzat@houmatoday.com.

We offer great benefits such as medical, dental, vision, 40lK plan, life insurance, paid vacation, paid sick days and paid holidays.
