New Voices Magazine and the Jewish Student Press Service (JSPS) have a full-time job opening for the Editor in Chief of an online magazine and Executive Director of the small nonprofit that publishes it. The start date is September 2013.
New Voices (est. 1991) is a national, independent magazine written by and for Jewish college students. Now a web-based publication, New Voices is published by the nonprofit Jewish Student Press Service, which was originally established in 1970 by a group of student activists to connect Jewish campus newspapers across the country.
New Voices covers Jewish issues from a student perspective, and has traditionally been progressive and pluralistic. New Voices and JSPS have launched the careers of countless journalists now working in both Jewish and mainstream media.
The salary is $32,000 per year and the position includes health benefits.

Position: Editor in Chief, New Voices Magazine; Executive Director, JSPS

The Jewish Student Press Service seeks candidates for the combined, single full-time position of Editor in Chief of New Voices Magazine and Executive Director of JSPS, beginning in September 2013. The position is traditionally filled by a recent college graduate. The new EIC/ED will work out of our New York office, which is located in the newsroom of the Jewish Daily Forward.

Preferred qualifications:
    •    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
    •    Strong writing and editing skills
    •    Strong interest in Jewish issues
    •    Extremely self-motivated
    •    Good at managing projects and working with others
    •    Experience in journalism
    •    Eager to build our social media presence
    •    Familiarity with digital journalism is a plus
    •    Excitement about writing editorials and opinion pieces is a plus
    •    Some experience with fundraising, nonprofits or activism is also a plus

Job Description:

On the editorial side, the Editor in Chief of New Voices Magazine is responsible for every aspect of the content of an online magazine written by and for Jewish college students. The Editor in Chief determines the editorial direction of the magazine, working with a team of student writers and editors on campuses across the country to generate innovative, high-quality content for
On the nonprofit side, the Executive Director of JSPS is responsible for the management of an independent nonprofit organization that has been around for more than 40 years, with the assistance and guidance of a board of directors composed largely of former editors of the magazine. The Executive Director is responsible for development (donor cultivation, grant writing), publishing (readership development) and general administration (overseeing finances, etc.).

This is a unique opportunity for a self-starting young journalist who is passionate about the Jewish community and the need for a vibrant Jewish student voice outside of professionally run campus organizations, and who is excited to take on a position with an exceptional degree of autonomy.
