The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is seeking a computer-assisted reporting specialist to work on a digitally focused in-depth reporting team. Our ideal candidate knows how to build data sets and use data analysis and an array of technical skills to unlock information and develop the high-impact enterprise reporting our audience craves. You know how to weave analysis into compelling and engaging stories, which drive the audience to examine complex issues in new ways.


We want someone who has curiosity and drive to analyze databases to uncover anomalies or trends,  draw connections through social network analysis or look at data with a geographic eye. You should have a strong grasp of database concepts and be confident working with data sets of all sizes and understand how to clean, parse and query data. You should enjoy working aggressively with open records and negotiating for data, and always wants to learn more. 


Our ideal candidate understands statistics and knows tools like Fusion Tables, Refine, R or equivalents. You should understand GIS basics and have a strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access. You should also have an understanding of Web-building blocks, such as HTML, JavaScript and basic scripting.


The Cedar Rapids market is a rich area for a data-minded reporter to explore. Presidential candidates criss-cross the state repeatedly ahead of the Iowa caucuses, while recovery dollars in the wake of massive flooding in 2008 have aided in ongoing recovery and redevelopment across the region.  The Cedar Rapids area plays a vital role in food production and is home to a major Big 10 research university, multiple major health care providers and companies with major interests in energy, aviation, manufacturing and agriculture. Political efforts to modernize the state’s tax policies and education system are ongoing.


You will need to be someone who thrives on a team and feels comfortable sharing tips and tricks. This position will be part of an enterprise reporting team that includes reporters, a data visualization specialist, web editors and a developer, and that will execute high-impact work across platforms.

Our news operation is converged and is a quality-driven newsroom that combines digital, print and broadcast for The Gazette,, KCRG-TV9 ,, as well as several  niche sites. Our company has a strong tradition of being independent and is employee-owned. The majority of our news team is focused on enterprise reporting, and we have a strong spirit of collaboration with other news outlets. While we’re focused in Cedar Rapids -- Iowa’s second-largest city – we have bureaus in Des Moines and Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa. The region is rich with things to do outside of work hours.


Qualifications & requirements:

Ideal candidate will be a flexible, self-motivated, inquisitive, creative go-getter and problem-solver who works well on a team and has excellent communication and team-building skills. Candidate must be highly organized, a confident decision-maker and committed to ongoing improvement and coaching. Juggling multiple deadlines simultaneously should be expected, and you should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. An undergraduate degree in informatics, journalism, computer science or a related course of study is required, and ideal candidate will have two to five years’ experience with visualizations. Understanding of journalism ethics and communication law is desired.
