Position Summary

The senior fitness editor’s primary responsibilities consist of researching, planning, assigning, editing and writing articles, blogs and other related content for the magazine and its website, with a particular focus on fitness. The senior fitness editor contributes to the editorial calendar and creative-planning process, and works closely with the executive editor and editor in chief to supply content that meets the creative and quality standards outlined in the creative blueprint. It is the senior editor’s responsibility to develop and maintain good working relationships with a stable of talented freelance writers, and to ensure that their work comes in on time, meets quality standards and adheres to the content and article outlines provided. Central tasks include Web and print research, writing, editing, and maintaining clear, consistent communication with freelancers and editorial staff. The senior editor is responsible for tracking and adhering to all deadlines specified in the production calendar. At any given time, a senior editor may simultaneously be working on three or four separate issues as they progress through various stages of editorial development. This is an on-site position, and may require a limited amount of travel for meetings and industry events. The senior fitness editor is also expected to embody and exemplify LTF and Experience Life’s brand.

 

Examples of Work Performed

  1. Contributes to content planning
  2. Maintains in-depth working knowledge of physical fitness (endurance training, aerobic training, endurance athletics, etc.), exercise trends, nutrition basics, and related topics, sources and trends.
  3. Works with Executive Editor and Editor-in-Chief to develop per-issue content outlines
  4. Researches, plans and assigns features and departments to coincide with production calendar
  5. Develops article outlines and identifies key sources
  6. Seeks out and reviews submissions from freelance talent; selects and evaluates writers on an ongoing basis
  7. Submits assignment and contract information to managing editor and project manager
  8. Manages freelance talent through various stages of concepting, development, writing, editing, fact checking and layout
  9. Writes copy for select features and departments as requested
  10. Reviews, edits and copy-fits articles in Word and inDesign; reviews PDFs of completed layouts
  11. Completes revisions as requested by executive editor and editor in chief
  12. Completes fact-check, source and other requests from editorial and proofing staff; supplies detail and revisions as needed
  13. Assists with art requests from art director
  14. Manages source/writer approvals and changes
  15. Tracks and submits source names for comp list
  16. Contributes ideas to creative and production process
  17. Works with Digital Initiatives Manager to develop social media strategy
  18. Blogs, tweets and participates in other relevant social media
  19. Attends meetings and industry events as required
  20. May help train, develop and assess junior staff to ensure continuous growth through orientations, direction or feedback

 

Minimum Qualifications   

 

  • Education:BA or BS
  • Experience:4+ years prior editorial or related experience

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  1. Outstanding oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills
  2. Strong knowledge of English grammar, spelling, style
  3. Ability to write and edit copy for clarity, accuracy and style
  4. Ability to multi-task and learn quickly, good memory and strong attention to detail
  5. Excellent organizational skills, including orderly storage of paper and electronic documents
  6. Proactive, energetic personality; inquiring, investigative mind
  7. Ability to operate a personal computer, plus strong computer skills and working knowledge of standard office software, including Microsoft Office. Emphasis on strong skills in Word, basic skills in Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Excellent Web research skills a must. inDesign skills a must.
  8. Ability to handle tight deadlines, reprioritize tasks on a daily and weekly basis
  9. Familiar and comfortable with digital platforms, including WordPress
  10. Comfortable with style and content inherent on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter
  11. Ability to self-start and manage a complex, challenging, deadline-driven schedule
  12. Ability to conduct, document and organize a wide variety of research online and in print
  13. Knowledge of standard office procedures
  14. Knowledge of health, wellness, fitness, quality-of-life content areas
  15. Ability to effectively oversee, manage and motivate contractors and freelancers
  16. Ability to build constructive business and editorial relationships and to diplomatically resolve conflicts and conflicting interests
  17. Ability to be accountable for maintaining high, reliable quality standards while working on overlapping assignments in a fast-paced team environment
