Description:

Burlington seeks a managing editor for its Information Center. The position is the No. 2 management position in the Information Center. Responsibilities include steering signature approaches on passion topic and accountability journalism and expanding reach on digital platforms. The successful candidate must be creative and needs a strong grasp of all disciplines. The position requires exceptional hands-on editing skills. Experience should include reporting and lean heavily toward management. Paramount is a thirst to reach the burgeoning mobile audience. Expanding video storytelling is essential. Burlington is a highly competitive newsroom. The news team has received repeated recognition for their watchdog efforts and earned a respectable share of national awards in the last two years, including three first places 2010-2011 for First Amendment coverage (Scripps, APME and Society of Professional Journalists). Among other national awards in 2012, Burlington placed as a finalist in the Pulitzer Prizes for editorial writing. In the same year, placed first in the SPJ online reporting category for a breaking news story driven by video in an open circulation category. The position reports to Executive Editor Michael Townsend.

 

Responsibilities:

· Works with the leadership team of Free Press Media to establish overall content strategy.

· Works with the executive editor to set priorities based on growth potential.

· Leads day-to-day planning of the editing team and oversees execution of content strategies on all platforms.

· Focuses on the burgeoning mobile audience.

· Encourages video storytelling.

· Employs practical applications of digital and social media.

· Develops long-term plans for accountability/watchdog journalism.

· Responds quickly to the needs of customers.

 

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum 10 years of newsroom experience.

· Management as well as reporting experience.

· Mastery of fundamental disciplines, including hands-on editing, headline writing and an eye for visuals.

· Wide-ranging digital experience.

· Planning skills. Ability to perform effectively in a multi-task/deadline oriented environment.

· Results driven.
