Company: The Des Moines Register
Ag.Energy Reporter
Job Status:  Full-time
Ad Expires:

Job ID: 1470762

The Des Moines Register seeks a talented journalist to cover a vital beat in Iowa journalism, agriculture and energy.  We seek a talented, experienced journalist to produce national-caliber work.  We’re looking for someone who can use our multimedia tools to dig into the numbers, tell compelling stories and break news.  The Register has a respected tradition of covering agriculture, and the story is becoming more compelling.

Iowa farmers must produce more to keep up with demand for grain to use in feed, food and fuel.  They’re also facing more volatile markets, weather patterns, government policies and consumer demands.  Economists question whether farming’s strength can continue to boost Iowa’s economy, a quarter of which depends on agriculture or ag-related manufacturing.  Iowa’s economy also depends on its growing role as an energy producer. The state is the No. 1 producer of ethanol and biodiesel and No. 2 producer of wind energy. But competition, changing policies and other factors threaten these industries.

We need a reporter who can expertly explore these trends and make them relevant for an increasingly urban audience.  The reporter will also cover  topics as varied as record high prices and debates over the environmental costs of production, all while explaining what this means to Iowans’ pocketbooks.

Successful candidate will tell stories through blogs, video and other online tools, as well as deliver high-impact watchdog and explanatory pieces.

A bachelor’s degree and five years' related experience required.  Digital experience preferred. Please include five to seven samples of your published work.

Des Moines is Iowa’s rapidly growing capital city with fast growing suburbs and a downtown in the midst of a building boom: including a new downtown library, arena, entertainment venues and a blossoming urban neighborhood of lofts, shops and restaurants.  Yet it remains a comfortably sized metro area with reasonable commutes.

We offer a competitive benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, generous vacation policy, 401(k), tuition reimbursement, and more.  The Des Moines Register is committed to diversity and proud to be an equal opportunity employer.  Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer drug test and acceptable motor vehicle record.
