Position:
Seeking Local Government Reporter
Location:
Florida
Job Status:  Full-time
Ad Expires:

Job ID: 1470760

Description:

The Tampa Bay Times is seeking an aggressive, energetic reporter to cover city government and city life in Clearwater, Florida. Clearwater is the county seat and Pinellas County's second largest city, and it provides rich opportunities for good journalism.

The job involves covering the business of city government, following city politics and holding officials accountable. But this reporter will not spend all of his or her time in City Hall. Clearwater is a diverse and interesting community, and we want a reporter who will explore the breadth and depth of it. The Clearwater reporter will be expected to know the heads of the neighborhood associations, establish contacts in the city’s African-American and Hispanic communities, build relationships with local entrepreneurs and the chamber of commerce, and get acquainted with school and religious leaders. We love quirky tales, trend pieces, and stories that help readers make sense of what’s going on around them. This reporter also will be expected to deliver enterprise work and investigative projects that can contend for 1B and 1A.

The work schedule is generally 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with regular night meetings. The Clearwater reporter, like other reporters in the Clearwater bureau, also participates in a rotation that involves covering day cops in St. Petersburg on Sundays every five or six weeks. We are looking to fill this job immediately.

Requirements include at least three years daily journalism experience, as well as curiosity, accuracy, ability to multitask, good writing on deadline, and the desire to be part of a dedicated, hard-working team in the Clearwater bureau.
