The La Grande Observer, a 5,000 circulation thrice-weekly paper located in beautiful Northeast Oregon, has an immediate opening for an aggressive, innovative reporter/news editor. As a reporter, you will be responsible for beats including local governments and natural resources. It requires doing the necessary reporting in person, on phone or on computer to provide up-to-date breaking news in our newspaper and on our website. You will select the most important/interesting news to explore in more depth for print and will work with other editors, reporters, photographers and designers across the newsroom.
As news editor, you must be a strong team player with excellent communication skills and solid leadership skills.This position will play a key role at The Observer and will be the No. 2 person in the newsroom. As the news editor, the successful candidate will help edit copy, proofread pages with speed and accuracy, according to Observer style, and help design pages on occasion. They will be expected to perform a broad range of editing tasks and must apply strong editing skills and sound news judgment in preparing local and wire content for publication and must demonstrate strong attention to detail and solid time management skills to juggle a multitude of tasks. They will work with a solid group of reporters and help to steer coverage of issues critical to The Observer’s readersLa Grande, a bustling community that is the hub of Northeast Oregon, is home to Eastern Oregon University.
