The USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism is seeking an Editor-in-Chief to lead its health care reporting team.

The three-year-old California HealthCare Foundation Center for Health Reporting at the USC Annenberg School is looking for an exceptional journalist with newsroom leadership experience and strong management skills to head this innovative approach to covering health care policy. As the center's top editor and project director, s/he must be an energetic visionary who can lead a team of experienced journalists in successful partnerships with California news media to produce first-rate explanatory and investigative work on health care and policy issues.

The editor-in-chief will work with the center's advisory board and the grant's principal investigator to pursue an innovative strategy for reporting about health care issues that concern Californians and to provide the conceptual framework for center journalists' ongoing work. S/he will shape the center's partnerships with California media outlets, including newspapers, radio, television, and websites, and s/he will be an articulate spokesperson for the organization in public forums throughout the state. The editor-in-chief is also expected to develop the center's solutions-based approach to journalism and to make it a learning organization. The editor-in-chief will also work regularly as an assignment and line editor on the center's projects, and this will entail in-newsroom editing with the center's partner news organizations.

The successful applicant should have at least ten years' experience leading a newsroom or department, including strategic, budget, personnel, and business responsibilities. Experience as an assignment and line editor on projects is essential. Candidates should possess unquestioned integrity and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, a collegial approach, and an ability to learn and lead by listening. They should be knowledgeable about California, its diverse populations, its government and politics, and its news media. Significant knowledge and experience in health care and health policy issues is a decided plus.

Candidates with experience or specialized knowledge in the following areas will have an advantage: marketing of news content, including social media marketing; investigative reporting, including data-driven reporting; multimedia storytelling platforms and technology; and a broad understanding of the structural changes under way in news organizations, including the rising role of nonprofits. The editor-in-chief reports to the project's principal investigator under the grant from the California HealthCare Foundation.
