Description:

10/10/13 UPDATE: The Register has selected finalists for these jobs. At this point we are accepting applications as back-up options and for consideration for future openings.  Thanks.

Newspapers are alive and growing in sunny Orange County, Calif. If you’re an outstanding copy editor with a passion for community news, it’s time to grow along with us. The Orange County Register is seeking candidates to fill two positions: full-time copy editor, and copy-editor trainee.  Here are the two job descriptions:

COPY EDITOR

The Orange County Register seeks a multi-skilled copy editor to join our community team. We quickly have expanded our 22 weekly hometown papers and launched two new daily papers in Orange County. Most recently, we launched a daily paper for Long Beach, Calif.  We need people with news judgment, keen attention to detail, a knack for compelling headlines and command of AP style. We need multi-taskers who can juggle multiple deadlines and thrive as part of a team. We prefer journalists with three or more years’ experience in a deadline-driven newsroom. If you don’t have that, convince us you deserve a look. If you have page-design experience, that’s a nice plus.  Experience with CCI Layout Champ also is a plus.

We value a diverse newsroom and offer a comprehensive benefits package.

To apply, send a resume, cover letter, salary requirements and pdf clips of 10 of your best printed headlines to RegisterCopyEditors@gmail.com .  If you have layout/design experience, please also include five of your best page layouts. Write “Copy Editor” on the subject line of your e-mail. No type-written headlines please. No phone calls please.

COPY EDITOR TRAINEE

The Orange County Register seeks two dynamic copy editors to work as paid trainees on our community team.

The ideal candidate will be an entry-level college graduate with the skills and desire to edit eye-catching pages for the Register’s rapidly-expanding weekly community papers. Successful candidates will have a command of AP style, keen attention to detail, news judgment, passion for community journalism and a knack for writing compelling headlines.

Candidates should be comfortable multitasking and juggling priorities under intense deadline pressure. Must demonstrate ability to work as part of a team where communication is key. We prefer candidates who have worked on their campus newspaper and -- ideally -- in a deadline-driven professional environment, such as a newspaper internship. Experience with CCI Layout Champ is a plus. Design/layout experience also is a nice plus.

Orange County is a diverse community, and we value diversity in our newsroom.

Each position pays an intern-level wage plus a housing allowance.

This is a full-time (40-hour) temporary position. After six months, the most successful trainees will be promoted to apprentice and invited to stay an additional six months, with benefits added.

To apply, send resume, cover letter, pdf clips of 10 of your best headlines and five of your best page layouts to RegisterCopyEditors@gmail.com . Write “Trainee: Copy Editing” in the subject line of your e-mail. No type-written headlines please. No phone calls please.

* Please note: For both of these positions, we are very interested in seeing headlines you have written for newspapers. Typewritten headlines or headlines on websites are not particularly useful, because they don't demonstrate your ability to draw a print reader into a story within a limited head count. Ideally, we'd like to see pdf clips of 10 individual stories topped by 10 of your best headlines. If you wrote headlines on the page samples you send us and intend for us to consider them as examples of your headline writing, please clearly state which headlines you wrote. Thank you.
