Company: Juneau Empire
A.M. Social Media/General Assignment Reporter
Job Status:  Full-time
Ad Expires:
July 22, 2013
Job ID: 1468911

We have an immediate opening for a multimedia-savvy general assignment reporter. We need someone who can relocate immediately (not a month from now) to complete our hard-working and award-winning news team.

What we are looking for:

You are a morning person with a knack for using social media and the ability to use our news website to get the stories for our A.M. readers. Your work will help to set a template for coverage throughout the day for our beat reporters. You have a proven track record of getting things done quickly and accurately. When news breaks you can create a quick morning video or audio update or put together a slideshow. You can cover a school spelling bee or a raging fire with equal ease.

This newly-created position is trusted with writing the newsroom’s morning updates through a high-energy blast of calls and website checks. We need news briefs or updates to catch our readers up on stories that have happened or changed overnight. This reporter is the “morning face” of the Juneau Empire Sunday through Thursday.

The other half of this job is general assignment reporting geared toward covering morning/afternoon events on a variety of beats. This reporter will file news stories as well as morning stories and briefs. The reporter is responsible for four in-depth, multi-part news or feature articles, as are all Empire reporters, over the course of the calendar year. On Sundays and Mondays the reporter will cover the Police and Fire beat.

Requirements: Excellent reporting and editing skills, demonstrated experience creating podcasts, news videos and online slideshows, photography skills, ability to interact well with public during stressful situations. Must own smartphone with high-quality camera and/or tablet device for use in the field uploading data for use on the website.
The Juneau Empire is an equal opportunity employer and provides a drug-free workplace. Successful passage of a mandatory pre-employment drug screening is required prior to employment. Juneau is Alaska’s capital city, and is accessible by plane and ferry. It is nestled between coastal waters and mountains in the Tongass National Forest, a temperate rainforest. There are many arts, entertainment and outdoor activities year-round.
