Iraq Oil Report is the industry-leading source of news and information about Iraqi oil, politics and security. Since 2009, we have established a track record of scrupulous reporting and perceptive analysis, and we are looking for staff to be part of our growing presence in global energy affairs.

We are looking to hire a Baghdad-based correspondent with a primary responsibility to cover Iraqi oil and political stories. This person will join a successful and dynamic news organization that values employee satisfaction as much as big scoops and smart analysis.

He or she will also share a broad range of duties with the rest of the editorial team, including editing, story planning, production of regular features, and information gathering in support of custom research.

The ideal candidate is experienced in western-style journalism; knows the energy industry and Iraq; and can write clear, accurate, and fast copy in English. Arabic skills are a plus.

•    Report from Baghdad primarily and other areas of Iraq when necessary, in coordination with Iraq Oil Report's country Bureau Chief, Deputy Bureau Chief and Managing Editor.

•    Write and/or report for a variety of stories throughout an average week, including breaking news, features, investigative stories, and smaller daily news bites.

•    The main role will be a leader in coverage of the government and private sector oil industry as well as political issues and developments. Secondarily will be coverage of security, economic and social topics.

•    Do all of the above as assigned and on own initiative.

•    Assist in editorial and planning process as part of global editorial staff, as assigned and on own initiative.

•    Share editorial and site maintenance responsibilities, as assigned and on own initiative, to include:

* Editing stories produced by Baghdad bureau and others.

* Write stories based on reporting from stringers in other provinces.

•    Share responsibilities for production and editing of regular Iraq Oil Report features.

•    Other duties as assigned.

•    Minimum 5 years of experience as a full-time reporter.

•    Experience covering either the energy sector or Iraq and the region, or both.

•    Excellent English language and journalistic writing skills.

•    Competitive pay, based on experience and meeting qualifications.

About Iraq Oil Report:

We are an American company with a primary news bureau in Baghdad and a footprint in all of Iraq's provinces. Our readers are oil company officials, business people, diplomats, investment and political risk analysts, and Iraqi government officials. Since the launch of our Baghdad bureau in 2009, we have provided our readers with top-quality news reporting and analysis about not only the oil sector but also politics, security, business, and social trends.

Our flagship product is our daily news reporting, which is available by subscription on our website. We also provide a custom research service, through which clients can leverage our information-gathering network to get ground-level answers to their questions.

The Iraq Oil Report team consists of a half dozen western editors, reporters, and support staff, based in both Baghdad and the U.S. We also employ dozens of Iraqis who report, translate, and otherwise enable our information gathering throughout the country. In the wake of the U.S. de-escalation and withdrawal in Iraq, as western news bureaus are reducing their staff or packing up shop altogether, Iraq Oil Report is in the country for the long haul. Our overarching mission is to answer the otherwise unmet need for top-quality information about the single most important topic affecting the future of Iraq.
