ONLINE DIRECTOR – Major Market in the Western U.S.

We have been asked to assist in the search for an Online Director for a major multiple platform print/digital news company in the Western region of the U.S.  This is a confidential search, so we can’t reveal the exact location and company until we enter the interviewing stages. 

They are seeking a proven visionary and leader to champion the content direction of the company’s news and information web site and all associated sites to help establish their online vision and key mission. The right person will enjoy the challenge of taking an already winning digital strategy to the next level and beyond. You’ll report directly to the overall editor and run your own show.  They want a self-starter who will come up with new and exciting ways of delivering news, information and advertising to an already big audience with the objective of making it bigger. You’ll have a staff of web and video developers who report directly to you. In addition, it will require a collaborative style of leadership to develop strong relationships with the desk editors and the I.T. departments. A team approach will be needed to maximize the effectiveness and consumer acceptance of the digital effort. A four year bachelor’s degree and at least five years in newsroom management is desired.

In this role, you will: use all reporting resources and user-generated content to determine the most appropriate and timely offerings for all digital products; oversee design and constant tweaking of sites to grow audience and encourage reader interaction; direct the evolution of social media; manage expense budgets; develop programs and initiatives to grow audience; translate reader needs into creative solutions that grow audience, including regular examination and alteration of all existing digital approaches; work with internal resources to track online traffic, analyze trends, make recommendations for strategic changes; work with I.T. to continually streamline and simplify the processes for accurately posting information to our sites; manage, mentor and develop skills of the site developers; stay out in front of the daily news and feature offerings and determine which stories, photos and video will be pushed to the website and/or mobile platforms; exhibit up-to-date knowledge of web-related events and developments.
