BBC News in Washington is looking for an experienced writer and reporter to write features and enterprise news stories the U.S. edition of  The successful candidate will be creative with digital techniques, agile with social media, independent in generating stories independently, accurate and fast in reporting and versatile as writer.  



The Features Writer will be expected to write three to five stories a week, mostly angles off of news stories but often entirely enterprising: must be able to write both light and heavy under a tight deadline.  The Writer will occasionally be asked to write hard news and breaking stories.

The Writer will also be enthusiastic and resourceful about using multimedia elements in stories routinely and is using social media to both report and distribute stories.  The Writer will be part of a small, agile digital team in a large bureau and will be expected to contribute to television, radio and web-first video efforts.

The Writer must have a wide-ranging knowledge of U.S. and international affairs and proven news judgement under tight deadline and should have a stable of sources and experts.

The Writer must learn BBC writing style and generate clean copy on deadline, as well as protecting the BBC’s editorial standards and practices.



Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; at least 4-6 years news experience, primarily digital or print, and a diverse portfolio of published work.

Proven editorial judgement and flair; the ability to generate original journalism, excellent editing skills; excellent writing and copy editing skills.

Experience using news content management systems; ability to navigate material and editorial input from multiple divisions of a news organization.



Effective communication and interpersonal skills to be able to establish rapport with people at all levels within the BBC.   Good in a team and joint projects; this isn’t a job for a solo artist.

Ability to work calmly under pressure.  Ability to work unsupervised and to tight deadlines. Ambition to experiment and innovate with the BBC’s online content.
