Description: Franklin & Marshall College is pleased to accept applications for the position of Staff Writer. The Staff Writer generates story ideas and builds and maintains relationships with students, faculty and staff to develop engaging stories that reflect the robust life of the College and demonstrate F&M's prominence as a leading liberal arts college. Reporting to the Director of News and Publications in the Office of College Communications, the Staff Writer writes and edits news stories about the people, events and initiatives of Franklin & Marshall College for the College's primary news vehicle, which is the F&M News website. The Staff Writer will also create a weekly email digest of news stories, in addition to writing stories for the College's quarterly magazine. The Staff Writer also will provide writing and editing assistance to enhance communications publications and websites that help recruit students, engage alumni and share news of the College. Responsibilities include: To learn more about the Office of College Communications, please visit http://www.fandm.edu/communications Requirements: Franklin & Marshall College seeks candidates with 5 to 7 years of experience in journalism, public relations or marketing, writing stories and other copy on deadline; preference will be given to candidates with experience in journalism. Education requirements for this position include a minimum of a Bachelor's degree. Applicants must have demonstrated ability to write clearly, persuasively and quickly; to edit and to proofread; be able to translate complex ideas into language understood by a layperson; possess superior interpersonal skills and discriminating news judgment; be motivated, reliable, highly organized and able to meet immediate and long-term deadlines; possess proficient skills in Microsoft Word; and be able to navigate databases and use online content management systems. Preference will be given to applicants that have news journalism experience, or experience as a news writer in a communications or marketing office at an institution of higher education. The ability and willingness to provide excellent service and to work in a collegial manner with students, faculty and staff, and other constituencies is essential.
