Company: Texarkana Gazette
Position:
Seeking City Government/Business Reporter
Location:
Texas
Job Status:  Full-time
Ad Expires:
February 26, 2013
Job ID: 1464592

Description:

The Texarkana Gazette, a 29,000 circulation regional daily covering Northeast Texas and Southwest Arkansas, has an immediate opening for a full-time reporter to cover business or city government. Prior reporting experience in one of these fields is a plus, but not required. Tenacity, dogged determination, attention to detail and strong writing,  communication, organization, planning, investigative and enterprise skills are required.
The reporter hired will receive assignments from editors, but will primarily be responsible for identifying, prioritizing and carrying out immediate and long-term coverage needs, including trends, developments, projects and breaking news.
Flexibility in scheduling is a must as working two to three nights per week will be necessary most weeks to cover meetings. The reporter will be required to write  eight to 10 stories per week and basic photography skills are a plus.
The cities of Texarkana are located in Arkansas and Texas, offering unique opportunities to become knowledgeable and versed in the two states’ respective city government, economic development and business laws. This affords the reporter the chance to witness and cover cooperation and contention at their best and worst while navigating a politically charged landscape. Astuteness is a necessity.
Transportation and water usage/rights/availability are two hallmark issues the reporter hired will tackle as our geographic location complicates, complements or challenges any developments.
The Twin Cities have two city governments including two city managers, two city councils, two fire departments, two police departments and a shared water utility, library and airport. Large employers in the area include an Army depot, two paper mills and a tire plant.
A bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field is desired. Appropriate professional experience may be deemed an acceptable substitute.
To apply please send resumé, cover letter and clips. Materials will not be returned.
