Position Summary:

We are looking for talented and experienced Associate Editor who will assist the editorial staff in producing a high quality magazine, as well as related online products, based on guidance and instruction from senior editorial staff. The incumbent is responsible for implementing and adapting relevant editorial within deadline.   

The Associate Editor will work in the following areas:

  • Conducts interviews and performs original research to write articles, headlines and captions to meet editorial calendar requirements based on guidance from the Executive Editor and senior staff.
  • Edits and proofreads written material to conform to publication’s style and editorial policy to ensure a consistent and quality publication.
  • Ensures high level of content accuracy and fact checking of all published materials. 
  • Gathers news and monitors industry developments to become knowledgeable in subject matter and contribute to editorial content.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned or requested for the general support of the publication. 
  • Trains and mentors other reporters; enforcing HousingWire standards on others’ work.
  • Assists with magazine production, including: planning content, making certain specs are met, and uses various program dealing with basic layout and graphic design.
  • Organizes material, determines angle or emphasis, and writes story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards. 
  • Manages various administrative duties including oversight of various writers (internal and freelancers).
  • May occasionally need to fill online editing duties.


  1. Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications, finance/economics or related field.
  2. Three or more years experience in publishing along with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  3. Ideal candidate will have prior experience in media and/or publishing; and will have knowledge of real estate and/or finance.
  4. Ability to take direction, multi-task, and work under rigid deadlines.
  5. Knowledgeable of HTML code, Microsoft Office, InDesign, and have basic computer and social media skills and familiarity with databases for research purposes.
  6. Must be able to generate clear, coherent copy.
  7. Must be able to dissect recent news stories for inspiration for an article topic, or have the ability to produce a timely commentary piece.
  8. Requires a person with creativity, as the individual must be able to develop content that is appealing to an entire industry.
  9. Writer must be able to tailor style so that it is consistent with the medium used.
  10. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent writing abilities and the stamina required to meet deadlines and work long hours. 
  11. Ability to exercise sound judgment, decision making and problem solving skills, while also communicating the need for further clarity or direction when needed.
  12. Must be capable of working independently in a fast-paced, dynamic, team-oriented environment.
  13. Familiarity with AP style.
