 The Roanoke Times seeks an enterprising and energetic reporter to cover Roanoke County, one of the largest localities in our region. Beat responsibilities vary widely, ranging from watchdog reporting on government spending to blogging on a local political race to news-feature writing about the county’s residents.
Strong candidates are at ease with a digital-first mindset, tackle breaking news with gusto, know how to work sources and are adept at ferreting out bigger enterprise stories. Applicants must have experience covering local government, including local politics, and must possess strong decision-making skills and a knack for identifying stories and moving on them quickly. 
Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Provides comprehensive coverage of the county government and one town within the county.
  • Originates enterprising story ideas that reflect what’s happening in county neighborhoods, the big concerns of residents and the challenges those communities face.
  • Develops sources and covers major cases in county court system.
  • Contributes breaking news posts to and consistently uses Twitter to cover news and engage readers.
  • Conceives photo and graphics ideas to help illustrate stories.
  • Regularly works nights to cover government meetings.
  • Works occasional weekend and evening shifts covering general assignment news

 Minimum skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least a year of news reporting experience at a daily newspaper or online news site, or the equivalent in strong internships
  • Proven ability to write clearly, accurately and meet deadlines in multiple platforms
  • Skilled in listening, learning and in understanding other people
  • Comfortable using a smart phone, other digital tools and social media to push out news and visuals quickly and engage readers
  • Collegial, collaborative and decisive; comfortable with change and able to adapt
