Company: The Post-Crescent
Seeking Community News Reporter
Job Status:  Full-time
Ad Expires:
February 18, 2013
Job ID: 1462380

We’re filling a community news reporter job, but what Post-Crescent Media is really seeking is a journalist with unrelenting curiosity, an unbridled competitive streak and a passion for reporting and writing stories that make a difference.

Every serious candidate should have a proven record of building sources, using public records laws and understanding how to use online resources to report. The focus of this position is general assignment reporting for our two community weekly newspapers, but we’re not looking for a stenographer. We don’t cover meetings for the sake of covering meetings. We enlighten and engage members of the communities we serve by holding officials accountable for spending decisions, presenting community challenges in full context, and pointing to solutions. We elevate the tiniest of voices in our reporting and see the official line for what it is.

The ideal candidate understands that local governments are fertile ground for telling the story of a community’s health, values and future, and is capable of putting together stories that illuminate how money is spent, power is exercised and lives are changed for good or ill. The reporting must reflect the fact that residents of our communities are deeply proud and fiercely protective of the places they call home. Self-confidence is a must for this reporter, who needs to feel equally comfortable interviewing an angry resident at the kitchen table and confronting the council president at city hall. Although the position focuses on general assignment reporting, the reporter will have plenty of opportunities to contribute to the daily newspaper as well as our digital platforms. It goes without saying that candidates need strong reporting and writing skills, as well as digital proficiency to engage in reporting through audio and video. Comfort with social media is a must.

Post-Crescent Media is part of Gannett Co., which owns 82 newspapers including USA Today, and Gannett Wisconsin Media, a network of 10 daily newspapers. For six of the past eight years, The Post-Crescent — we work in Wisconsin’s Fox Valley, a few minutes south of Green Bay — has been named Daily Newspaper of the Year in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association’s “Better Newspaper Contest” and has been honored with numerous “Best of Gannett” awards in our 11 years with the company, as well as other state and national journalism awards.
