 About the position:  First Book seeks a talented, energetic manager to oversee our social media platforms (over 100,000 followers across multiple channels) and our high-quality blog, and to create opportunities for raising funds, increase First Book’s network of teachers and program leaders, and cultivate strong relationships with bloggers, online media and influential figures in the worlds of education and social enterprise.

 We seek someone who is passionate about social media, well versed in best practices and adept at integrating social media across organizational functions and audiences.  This includes promoting cross-promotional opportunities with colleagues in development, corporate and nonprofit partnerships, and volunteer management.  The Social Media Manager will take initiative in identifying new ways to leverage social media to advance the organization’s mission and goals.  

 This newly-upgraded position at First Book is ideal for someone who is creative yet strategic, disciplined yet nimble, thoughtful yet quick to seize opportunities. The successful candidate will be flexible and able to juggle multiple and changing priorities in a fast-paced, pressured environment. Excellent sense of humor is a must.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Responsible for daily management of First Book’s social media presence on Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn and other emerging platforms, as well as First Book’s blog
  • Create original content for First Book’s online channels
  • Work closely with other departments to share feedback from external audiences and integrate social media more closely across the organization
  • Research, present and implement new ideas and approaches to meet First Book’s goals;
  • Drive registration and awareness of First Book among educators and nonprofit/ community program leaders.
  • Increase familiarity and engagement with First Book’s resources among eligible prospects and   registered educators; increase their usage of the First Book Marketplace
  • Use social media to build donor email lists and increase revenue
  • Cultivate relationships with bloggers, online media and influential figures in the worlds of education and social enterprise to raise awareness of First Book and CEO Kyle Zimmer
  • Increase engagement and sense of community among First Book’s existing supporters and expand the total number of social media followers
  • Measure effectiveness of various online efforts and provide regular tracking reports and metrics to First Book’s leadership team


  • Proven track record of using social media to meet organizational goals, preferably membership and fundraising
  • Excellent communications skill, including polished, professional and engaging writing style, plus solid editing skills. Able to write well quickly
  • Familiarity with content management systems (i.e., WordPress, Joomla, etc.) and basic HTML coding skill
  • Professional experience using analytic tools (i.e. – Google Analytics, HooteSuite, etc.) and providing feedback
  • Committed team player who is comfortable taking on multiple responsibilities and working outside the formal role to help other members of the Marketing/ Communications team in areas such as editing and copy writing, media outreach, email marketing, project management, etc
  • A consummate team-player with a good-natured, low-stress, upbeat personality
  • Experience with graphic design and/or web video production are not required, but would be a major plus

Education and/or Experience:

  • Three plus years experience in marketing and/or communications
  • B.A. in marketing, business, communications, or a related field
