At The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), our associate editors develop and write accurate, insightful articles and produce other media content for the Journal of AHIMA and other AHIMA publications (print and online). This is done to help the magazine and AHIMA publications fulfill their mission as professional development tools that keep readers current on issues that affect HIM practice.


  • Develop, research, and write feature articles for the Journal of AHIMA, Journal of AHIMA Web site, AHIMA Advantage, and other AHIMA editorial publications.
  • Serve as section editor for select Journal of AHIMA departments, working with HIM subject matter experts on editorial planning, article development, and article editing.
  • Find and interview article sources, develop source contacts, and develop subject matter expertise in key strategic healthcare and health information management topics.
  • Assist in the development and writing of content for various Journal sections.
  • Assist Journal staff in creating and writing content for annual convention newspaper and other special event coverage.
  • Produce and edit multimedia editorial material (audio and video) for the Journal digital edition and Journal Web site. Work with department staff to coordinate and produce multimedia content.
  • Proofread each issue of the Journal of AHIMA and AHIMA Advantage publication.


  • At least three years reporting experience writing news and/or non-fiction based articles for newspapers or magazines
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications
  • Editorial content development and production knowledge
  • Some copyediting/proofreading experience; knowledge of editing conventions
  • Experience with audio/video editorial content development, production, editing
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills; ability to produce under deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Strong self-direction
  • Flexible, able to juggle many projects
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office)
  • Comfort level with electronic/new media publishing
