Description:

The Evansville Courier & Press is located along the Ohio River in the Southern tip of Indiana and we serve Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky and produce the leading local news website and mobile site in the region.

The features department is seeking a senior writer who will be the best writer in the newsroom. The best applicant will be one who has already honed his/her writing skills in news or features beat coverage. The job will go to the one who demonstrates strong writing and creative reporting skills. You will become the one who automatically steps up to write the topper on a package when we have a major breaking news story that two or three reporters or the entire newsroom is covering. You will bring the nut graph to that kind of story, capturing what the event means to the entire community.

The best applicant will have his/her finger on the pulse of the community and will recognize cultural trends and know historic dates and be able to localize traditional holidays and events with fresh perspectives each year. You will find the best people in the region to tell each story and choose the best method to tell that story across all our platforms through words, audio and video in Twitter, Facebook, online and in print. It is essential to be able to look for new ways to interact with readers in every story. Coverage topics for this  position spans music, entertainment, culture and lifestyle.

The position may also involve some editing and working with other reporters, interns and freelance writers to help direct the print, online and Facebook presence of the features department.

The best applicant will be the one who demonstrates the desire to join readers in all the new adventures possible in the digital world. You must be a team player who can work well with all departments.


Education & Experience/Certifications
Requires a BS/BA in news/media discipline or equivalent experience.
A minimum of  2 to 5 years of experience in a related field.
 
Skills & Abilities
Thoroughly understands reporting fundamentals, including issues involving access, privacy, libel and ethics.
Must be able to write clearly and succinctly on a variety of topics.
Must have the intellectual curiosity to follow the volatile issues of the day and look for ways to allow readers a chance to voice their perceptions on those issues.
Must be proficient in the use of web publishing tools, the ability to post breaking news and/or the ability to learn new technology quickly.
Must be able to communicate clearly and openly with other employees.
Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers and the general public.
Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
Must be organized in order to stay ahead of the expected aspects of a beat – envisioning trends, preparing for possible detours and scheduling timely follow-ups.
Consistently able to meet deadlines.
Knowledge of database journalism a plus.
Fluency in Spanish a plus.
