Milton Hershey School (MHS) is seeking a Media Relations Manager (MRM). This position plays an essential role at the School in the furtherance of the School’s mission by promoting the awareness of Milton Hershey School’s life-changing work and the legacy of Milton Hershey. Developing positive brand awareness and strategies for leveraging social media tools are two key initiatives for the role. This position is a blend of media relations expertise and marketing experience.

The Media Relations Manager works closely with the Senior Director of the Communications Department for Milton Hershey School. The media relations role includes producing, researching and writing positive stories to run across multiple platforms, as well as securing earned media and developing marketplace brand strategies. It also includes strategic responses to crisis and/or breaking stories.

The MRM works extensively with many constituents, including the Senior Director of Communications, Executive Teams, the Communications Team and numerous departments within Hershey entities. Creativity, assertiveness, effectiveness, time management and journalistic abilities are crucial. In absence of the Senior Director of Communications, the MRM formulates statements and acts as spokesperson to the media as necessary and appropriate. The MRM also plays a vital support role to Senior Director in planning and response.

The MRM provides both internal and external communication support for policy issues and initiatives affecting the School and the Hershey Trust. The MRM also serves as an editorial resource, providing communication counsel and writing/editing support to ensure all messaging is communicated in a clear and consistent manner.


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 8 or more years experience in journalism, public relations and/or media relations required.
  • Demonstrated success in producing positive brand awareness via multiple media outlets and leveraging social media.
  • Experience as a public spokesperson. Crisis response experience preferred.
  • Successful experience in marketing and/or brand development a plus.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including demonstrated success communicating with a wide variety of audiences. Includes a demonstrated ability to create consensus in high-pressure situations.
  • Demonstrated capability to produce high-quality written communications within tight timetables.
  • Requires on-call availability 24/7/365.
