Description:

Backstage, a leading entertainment and performing-arts industry magazine, is looking for an Art Director with extensive creative experience, strong visual design skills, and a discerning eye for color and style. This individual will be responsible for overseeing the editorial design of our weekly publication. The ideal candidate will have experience as a lead designer and/or art director at a consumer magazine.
 
Responsibilities include:
 
• Conceptualizing and designing covers, features, special inserts and other premiere portions of the magazine.
• Managing and collaborating with the associate art director in the creative, efficient layout and production of the weekly magazine, including cover stories, features, departments and listings.
• Managing freelance art budget.
• Recruiting/assigning professional freelance photographers and scheduling/managing photo shoots.
• Working with editorial leadership to maintain the identity and voice of the publication.
 
The ideal candidate should have:
• A portfolio that contains design examples from leading publications.
• A demonstrated ability to package editorial content in a way that attracts readers and advertisers.
• Extensive knowledge and experience working with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) for print and digital production.
• Ability and willingness to work under tight deadline.
• Knowledge of digital cross-platform publishing a plus.
