Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Do you have a genuine and proven interest in science writing? Can you translate what seems like impossibly complex research into a riveting narrative? And can you shake off the label of “science writer” to be more versatile? The University of Maryland is seeking a senior writer/editor who can juggle lots of flaming torches. This person will report and write articles, marketing brochures, video scripts and ads that promote the university. He or she will work particularly closely with the campus research community to produce a bimonthly newsletter and biannual mini-magazine, and will contribute briefs and feature stories to Terp, the university magazine published three times a year. In every assignment, the senior writer/editor will contribute creative, compelling, innovative writing and will assist the university editor in ensuring that all materials published by the office meet the highest editorial standards and align with the university’s objectives and needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, English or a science field, or a bachelor’s degree in any field with a master’s degree in journalism, communication, English or a science field, is required.

A minimum of seven years of proven communications excellence and/or project management experience in a professional writing and editing environment, particularly in science writing and informational and promotional material, is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The ability to identify science-based story ideas and distill complex concepts into clear, engaging copy;

The ability to manage multiple projects and evolving priorities and to see opportunities to present content in different platforms;

The ability to work creatively, collaboratively and on deadline and budget;

Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, and strong interpersonal skills.


Familiarity with higher education environment and knowledge of AP style are preferred.

Additional Information:

Physical Demands of the Position: Traditional office environment, with much time spent at the computer and on the phone. Ability to travel across campus for meetings and interviews.

The salary range for this position is $50,000s – $ 63,000s.
