Position:
Seeking Editor for Navy base publication
Location:
California
Job Status:  Full-time
Ad Expires:

Job ID: 1459413

Description:

The Ridgecrest Daily Independent has an immediate opening to take over the Rocketeer II, a publication that serves the Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake. The editor is expected to work closely with the NAWS China Lake Public Affairs Officer to develop content for this publication that comes out every two weeks. This will include covering stories on the base, taking photos, editing submitted content and laying out pages under a strict deadline. Knowledge of Quark is a must. Previous experience working with the Military is a plus, but not required. An applicant must be able to start immediately.

China Lake is a cutting-edge research and testing facility in the Mojave Desert of Eastern Kern County. It is one of the largest land-based facilities in the Navy. It is home to multiple naval commands, all of which work with the Rocketeer II to produce articles and content for each edition. China Lake is a gem in the Navy. The base is nestled in the Eastern Sierra within the Indian Wells Valley. The city of Ridgecrest is the support community, which houses nearly all the base employees and has a strong symbiotic relationship with the base. Ridgecrest is within three hours of Las Vegas and Los Angeles and a short day trip away from Death Valley, Mt. Whitney and Mammoth Lakes. It has plenty of outdoors activates for the adventurous and a strong small-town atmosphere.

A successful applicant must be able to hit the ground running and learn quickly. Because the content focuses on the Navy base, all stories and photos are subject to approval from the Navy. We stress being a strong team member and going above and beyond to ensure the production of a quality product. Applicants must show the ability to juggle multiple tasks and be flexible. There is also the opportunity to work on special projects for the Daily Independent.

Please send a resume, cover letter, writing and layout samples and a list of references to John Watkins at jwatkins@ridgecrestca.com.
