The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Indiana

Bloomington is the home to Indiana University and is located approximately one hour south of Indianapolis.

Experience: • 1-3 years experience reporting and writing

Must have reliable transportation and valid driver's license.

Education: • Bachelor’s degree

Working Conditions: • Duties are performed in an office environment and also outside of the office at various locations. • Employee will be exposed to a variety of environmental conditions when working outdoors • Computer useage and communication • Some evenings and weekends are required.  Must have reliable transportation and valid driver’s license.

Report local news in a thoughtful, thorough journalist manner. Write informative, fair, and concise news stories relevant to the local community. Must track news, develop sources, and communicate with editors about stories.

Essential Functions: • Research news and potential news stories • Interview, check facts, and set up photo appointments • Stay in touch with sources/organizations about events/issues/news • Communicate with editors in a variety of ways about news production and scheduled stories • Write news and news features concisely, accurately and coherently under deadline pressure • Attend public meetings and ask relevant questions • Process work related e-mail • Must be able to handle multiple reporting assignments and remain calm in a fast paced environment • Interview sources and interact with the public via e-mail, phone and in person • Attend daily newsroom meetings • Interact with readers via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter etc. • In-depth proofreading for grammar, spelling • Able to work with all socio-economic levels within the community • Work on long-term projects, other general assignment stories, or special series • Ongoing communication with fellow reporters to answer questions on covered topics/issues • Fill in for general assignment shifts if necessary • Performs other job-related duties as assigned • Ability to take photos and videos • Assign photos to accompany stories, writes cutlines for photos • Go out on assignment to the scenes of crimes or fires.
