Description:

The Big Bear Grizzly is an award-winning community weekly serving Big Bear Valley, a Southern California mountain resort town. We have an immediate opening for a full-time reporter.

The ideal candidate must be resourceful, have a nose for news, juggle multiple beats and stories, meet deadlines and be able to leap tall buildings at a single bound—in other words, be a solid community weekly news reporter.

This is not an entry-level position for a recent college graduate. Experienced only need apply; college newspaper staff doesn’t count. The ideal candidate is someone who has a minimum of two years experience working on a weekly or daily paper and has a passion for community journalism.

We need someone with a strong news background covering local government and public affairs, business and related issues. The candidate must be able to  hit the ground ready to report and write. While the reporter may write features, the emphasis is on local news.

Candidate must be a self-starter, have strong grammar skills and be AP Style proficient.

Big Bear is a small town with a small-town feel and big stories to tell. Candidates must like small town life with beautiful scenery, a forest, two ski/snowboard resorts, a lake and four seasons with snow in the winter, where everyone knows your name. The population is about 12,000. Larger cities are an hour away.

Publications include The Grizzly, The Grizzly Weekender, bigbeargrizzly.net and several special sections.

We offer a benefit package, profit sharing, mileage and some extra perks like a season pass to the ski resort.

This position is open and we would like to fill it by Feb. 1. Candidates from Southern California are preferred; we do not offer relocation reimbursement.

Send cover letter, resume and a minimum of four clips, (links to clips preferred) showing writing and reporting diversity to Judi Bowers via e-mail to jbowers.grizzly@gmail.com or by mail to P.O. Box 1789, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315. Include references. No phone calls, please.
