Description: JOB SUMMARY Shape, manage and oversee the live daily newscasts that will provide a responsible, substantive, and visually appealing source of local news and information serving the Hispanic communities in Southern California. Responsible for enforcing high journalistic standards, developing a strong on-air team, managing staff, news systems and resources, and producing a visually appealing program. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB *Define a clear mission, purpose and vision for KWHY Mundofox 22 news. *Determine overall journalistic strategy and policy for daily live news broadcast. *Be responsible for overall journalistic content and integrity. *Recruit, hire and coach on-air anchors, reporters and other contributors as needed. *Improve and approve reporter and producer scripts, and prompter copy. *Oversee the monitoring of news sources, and development of stories. *Choose and shape the day’s lead story and supporting stories. *Develop a wide variety of news sources to create the newscast’s distinctive quality. *Oversee creation of distinctive and effective visual elements. *Critique on-air talent to assure maximum performance and effective interviews. *Help devise and implement systems for smooth production of newscast (video tape library, roll-ins, program archive, script formats, vo’s, bumpers, teases, graphics, satellite feeds, etc.). *Set story and production priorities and manage staff accordingly. *Help staff develop professionally. *Forge constructive relationships between KWHY Mundofox 22 and Hispanic community groups, institutions and leaders. *Responsible for the allocation of personnel and production resources, and keeping the newscasts on budget. S/he will help monitor and if necessary revise production budget as needed. *Perform other duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS *Extensive experience (ten-plus years) in the production of a daily live newscast for a major market, preferably with a Spanish speaking television station. *Ideally previous experience as managing editor or executive producer. *Must be bilingual; Spanish-English *Excellent broadcast writing /editing copy skills. *Excellent news judgment and judgment of on-air talent. *Creative approach to stories. *Highly organized and systematized. *Strong leadership and people skills. *Excellent “teaching” skills. (i.e. coaching and developing staff skills.) *Able to communicate clearly, calmly and concisely under tight deadlines and production pressure. *Thorough knowledge and understanding of southern California culture, diverse communities and politics. *Understanding and knowledge of NABET union regulations.
