Description:

The Abedeen American News, a 14,000 daily circulation newspaper in Aberdeen, South Dakota, is seeking a Night News Editor. We're looking for someone with 3-5 years of experience in both management and writing/editing. The successful candidate will, preferably, have a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or communications. This individual will be responsible for the news content of the daily newspaper and digital products, special sections, projects, and products. They will oversee editing and presentation for both print and online.

Essential Functions are as follows:

• Ability to collaborate with multiple departments to produce a quality daily newspaper and digital products

• Develop and oversee the news content, plan content and schedules

• Make quick decisions on deadline in a professional manner

• Troubleshoot issues and develop strategies for improvement

• Ensure that deadlines are met for digital products and press starts

• Supervise and review direct reports

• Mentor staff and encourage continuous improvement

• Serve as liaison between community members and desk editors via phone, e-mail or in person

• Develop strategies to grow readership

• Succinct writing, proofing and editing skills, with a strong drive for accuracy and attention to detail

• Hire employees and assist with disciplinary procedures

• Responsible for copy editors and designers  

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Self-motivated, and possessing an unwavering work ethic and strong desire to learn

• Able to interact with the public

• Command of the English language, AP style, and grammar

• Able to write clearly and concisely

• Expertise with Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Suite 

• Working knowledge of design and editing software, along with Web coding, HTML and social media

• Able to plan, assign, and edit news stories

• Thrive in a fast-paced, highly-productive and collaborative environment, with strong organizational and multi-tasking skills

• Target and achieve results, set challenging goals, prioritize tasks, overcome obstacles, and accept accountability

• Ability to adapt to change; open to new ideas' willingness to take on new responsibilities; ability to handle pressure

• Able to work in a team environment

• Work well with department heads on projects and goals

• Able to work within deadlines

• Ability to manage and motive others
