Description:

WAMU 88.5, the leading public radio station for NPR news and information in the greater Washington area, is seeking a Producer for the Kojo Nnamdi Show.

The Producer for the Kojo Nnamdi Show will work closely with Managing Producer and Senior Talk Host to create topical, issue-oriented, daily live interview/listener call-in programs. The Producer will also be responsible for assigning tasks to be carried out by interns, volunteers, and call screeners, and reviewing that work.

Minimum requirements include:

  • At least two years of experience in journalism, news, or publishing and a bachelor’s degree; or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the necessary skills and abilities required for this job
  • Possessclear and accurate knowledge of local, national and global current events and be able to provide judgment on which stories will work on the radio and which will have currency as much as a week away
  • Capable of doing complex research and writing in order to compile and provide support material for the host
  • Able to write in a clear and concise "radio" manner, understanding what works on-air and what doesn't
  • Excellent phone manner, especially when pre-interviewing potential guests for the program and when answering the phones
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, patiently and persuasively with the widest possible variety of people
  • Able to formulate clear and insightful answers to questions and provide the answers before the show goes on the air
  • Comfortable working with computers, proficient with word processing, and have general office skills
  • Demonstrated skill working with creative individuals
  • Experience working under constant deadline pressure and the ability to react to breaking news and unexpected events with calm and clear thinking

Preferred requirements include:

  • Knowledge of radio production techniques
  • Previous talk show experience
  • Experience with computer based research tools
