The Springfield Sun has an immediate opening for an Editor. This is a “sleeves rolled up” editor position where the editor is also the lead writer, photographer and paginator. The Sun is a 3,700 circulation weekly newspaper in Washington County in central Kentucky, 45 minutes from Lexington and Louisville. The newspaper earned first place this year for General Excellence in the Kentucky Press Association contest. The Sun has been providing coverage to the community since 1892.

The editor is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the news department, which includes one additional reporter.


  • Degree in journalism or related field with a minimum of 2 years experience; supervisory experience helpful
  • Ability to coach, organize and develop staff
  • Ability to work well with other departments as well as outside customers
  • Must be well organized and a self-starter with the ability to direct day-to-day operations
  • Demonstrate solid news judgment skills
  • Effective time-management and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of overall newspaper production process
  • Strong editing, writing, designing and pagination skills. Proficiency in InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills


  • Supervise staff writer/sports writer and occasional stringers
  • Write news and features along with taking photos for paper and special sections
  • Edit and proofread submitted as well as staff-written copy
  • Handle front page design and layout as well as layout for inside pages and pagination
  • Write weekly editorial and column
  • Update website
  • Be active in the community and represent the newspaper in community and civic activities
