Description:

When you hear the word Thunderdome do you think of Tina Turner’s hair? Well, admittedly, so do we. But, do you also think about journalism, collaboration, tenacity, creativity, diversity, ambition, quality and agility? If so, we want to hear from you.

Digital First Media is seeking a web producer to join the features team at Project Thunderdome in New York City. The producer will report to the features editor and be responsible for working with the technology, health, food, entertainment and travel channel managers to identify content within the Digital First network that can be packaged, edited, produced and syndicated back to the network. It will require occasional night and weekend hours.

What is Thunderdome? Watch this 60-second video featuring Digital First Media CEO John Paton explaining the concept and check out our blog as well.

Based in New York City, the Thunderdome team will provide content for the more than 800 multi-platform products – including print, web and mobile – for news products produced by both the MediaNews Group and Journal Register Company. We will be working with 75 daily newsrooms and dozens of nondaily news operations in 18 states and managing non-local content efforts across the entire network.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining Thunderdome’s web properties, including: basic web production, editing copy, producing live coverage, writing headlines, blurbs and captions.
  • Helping get pickup from external sites for DFM content.
  • Editing copy for accuracy and national distribution.
  • Supporting the suite of Thunderdome sites on nights and/or weekends.

In addition to the tasks described above, other needs will surely arise as Thunderdome development continues, so any job candidate must be flexible and willing to adapt to changing conditions on the ground.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Must have at least 2 years’ journalism experience.
  • Strong grasp of the web and/or experience producing for the web.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written skills.
  • Strong and consistent attention to detail and an eye for creating the right content mix for each of the features channels.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work beyond normal work hours as assignments demand, since the news cycle is unpredictable.
  • Professional demeanor
  • Positive, can-do attitude
  • A desire to take risks and try new things.
