Description:

Business Reporter Multimedia Journalist

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times is looking for an energetic reporter/multimedia journalist who can turn meaty business stories for page 1 or the business section front several times a week. We need someone who will help place a heavy emphasis on this community’s effort to grow its economy and other business issues. Someone who can mine nuggets from local business leaders and tell readers what the really need to know, going beyond the spin of what talking heads want to tell the public.

This journalist’s main sources will be people who consider elected officials their hired help. This journalist will know how to go beyond the public officials and reach those people who have the most influence over those public officials. This journalist wants to be on Page 1 as often as possible.

Corpus Christi has an environment rich for business stories. The area is home to six refineries and numerous chemical plants, two military bases and the sixth largest port in the nation. It’s also an area that has struggled in its pursuits to attract a more diverse economic base. We’re looking for a reporter who can tell these stories and most importantly, tell the readers why they should care.

This person should expect to use all of the visual and multimedia storytelling tools available at the Caller-Times, circulation 64,000 Sunday,  47,000 daily, (with a combined online and print reach of 81 percent), including staff photographers, graphic artist, page designers and the newspaper’s website, Caller.com.

A Business Reporter’s background and Spanish Fluency are a plus, but not mandatory. Applicants must have at least 2 years of daily newspaper experience or internships at daily newspapers combined. Being able to work with databases and having computer-assisted reporting skills is a huge asset. The Caller-Times, a subsidiary of the E.W. Scripps Company pays competitive salary and has an excellent benefits package.

Corpus Christi sits on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, about three hours from Southwest Houston and two hours from south of San Antonio. The tropical climate, beach, diverse population and growing area make Corpus Christi a dynamic area for telling great stories.

The paper consistently is among the top award winners in the region for a mid-sized daily, including the Texas APME’s best newspaper and best Web site in the 30,000 – 124,999 circulation categories. Be ready to work hard and grow professionally. We’re going to fill this spot quickly.
