Description: The Valley Morning Star, a 20,000-circulation daily newspaper in Harlingen, Texas, is looking for a page designer/copy editor to join our staff. The Star sports staff specializes in high school sports and covers everything from football to baseball, track & field to swimming. Typically, the sports section ranges from 3-4 pages daily and up to nine on Sundays. Candidates must be proficient in Quark and Photoshop, and be able to layout and copy edit pages on deadline. Solid writing and reporting skills are a bonus, but the main focus of the job would be to produce pages on a nightly bases. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, communications or graphic design. Applicants must have a car. Our reporters contribute to our sister newspapers in McAllen and Brownsville, with a combined readership in excess of 70,000 daily. Anyone interested in the position should be well-versed in sports in general and have knowledge of the use of the Web. In addition to the above requirements, the applicant should also be able to know his/her way around social media (Facebook, Twitter) as it is a big part of the job at the Star.
