Description:

The Osceola News-Gazette, a 45,000 circulation bi-weekly newspaper in Kissimmee, Fla., has an opening for a general assignment reporter. We cover the communities of Kissimmee, St. Cloud, Poinciana, Celebration and the growing Lake Nona medical city area. Successful applicants will be just as comfortable covering the local fair or a visit by the next president (Obama visited Kissimmee twice in 2008).

The successful applicant also will be a multi-talented writer and paginator/page designer, with the ability to occasionally provide photographs to accompany their stories. This person must be dedicated to excelling at local coverage, identifying and producing enterprise stories and contributing to special sections. Must be organized, deadline-conscious and a stickler for accuracy and fairness.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, journalism degree preferred.

• Several years of experience in the newspaper field. Experience may substitute for education.

• Expertise with InDesign and familiarity with Adobe Photoshop.

• Some knowledge of HTML and formatting content online.

• Strong interpersonal skills.

• Must be an organized self-starter who can communicate with and assist the news staff and others as needed.

• Possess time management skills and be able to work well with others under deadline pressure.

• Be able to meet and deal with the public on newspaper and community issues.

• Excellent grasp of Associated Press style.

• Possesses a valid Florida driver license and reliable transportation.

Essential functions:

• Cover news and assigned local government beats and write feature stories.

• Write regular columns and/or editorials.

• Generate and develop unique stories and/or photographs.

• Proofreading of newspaper pages.

• Participate in newspaper projects and take part in community activities as time allows.

• Post content to www.aroundosceola.comand our various social media outlets in a timely fashion.

Work schedule:

This is a flexible 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. shift, with early shifts on deadline (Wednesdays & Fridays) and evenings and weekend coverage when required.
