                                               Experienced Reporter Needed -  American Medical News

 

The successful candidate will serve in downtown Chicago as a reporter for the Professional Issues section of American Medical News, an award-winning national print (215,000-circulation) and online news publication (amednews.com) for physicians, published by the American Medical Association. You will be expected to deliver news and feature articles that are thoroughly researched, well-written, and tightly focused on the interests and information needs of our physician audience. This position requires developing articles covering topics related to health care issues, including medical education, physician work force, scope-of-practice trends and physician discipline. This job also involves covering developments in clinical medicine and public health. You will be covering a critical part of the health sector, which overall accounts for 20 percent of the U.S. economy, and is undergoing massive transformation due to government and private health care reforms. American Medical News is among the best-read medical publications in the nation. 

 

To qualify for this important position, you must possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree; preferably in journalism.
     
  • At least three years experience as a full-time writer/reporter, preferably on a daily or weekly publication.  Experience covering the health care business field, or any business field, is desirable. Online experience a plus.
     
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under deadline pressure.
     
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment while maintaining a strong individual contribution.
     
  • Excellent writing and interviewing skills.
     
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to effectively interface with individuals of varying backgrounds, levels, and expertise.
     
  • PC literacy; specific expertise with newsroom publishing systems preferred.
     
  • Ability to accommodate occasional travel.
