Description:

Public safety/night police reporter needed for daily suburban Philadelphia website, newspapers. Job demands reporter who is curious, document driven and can comb criminal courts and understand data-driven reporting. You will spend time knee-deep in snow at a chain-link fence because that’s the best vantage point of a shooting scene. You will spend time developing sources among reluctant-to-talk beat cops, volunteer firefighters, 911 dispatchers, fire police and their supervisors – anyone in the know who will, someday, tip you to the most-viewed and read story of the week. You will spend your downtime working on trend pieces. You’re expected to know/learn the nuances of the criminal beat, whom to contact when no one will talk and the difference between first, second and third-degree murder. We’re looking for someone with a minimum of three years experience. A strong knowledge of video editing (FinalCut) would be helpful. Contact Harry Yanoshak, content editor, The Intelligencer (hyanoshak@calkins.com; 215-345-3051). Deadline to apply: Feb. 10.
