If journalism excellence awards are important to you, a position open at the Bryan-College Station Eagle will provide plenty of opportunities for such recognition. Of course, investigative stories, captivating features and breaking news aren't just handed out. You'll have to earn it.

We have two job openings:

* We're looking for a writer with a few years of reporting experience who can stay ahead of competitors covering higher education issues at Texas A&M — one of the largest public colleges in the country. Government reporting experience a plus, as beat includes covering the legislature, along with city government. Critical thinking skills are a must whether the reporter is at a board of regents meeting, digging through hundreds of documents or covering a plane crash via social media; the expectations are high.

* Police reporter/general assignments: Lots of room on this beat to show off reporting skills and dig deep into issues. One of our recent police reporters now is at the San Antonio Express-News, another is writing for the Dallas Morning News.

Both the higher ed and police reporter positions require an organized person who takes initiative, is tenacious and has a passion for journalism in the digital age. We hope references tell us that the reporter has excellent source development skills and is at ease in most any setting.

The Eagle: We are a small daily newspaper (72,000 readership) that likes to think like a large newspaper, and are considered somewhat of a boot camp for journalists who have aspirations to move on to a metro. Experienced editors work closely with staff. To see what some of our best work has been in recent years, go here: Note that a reporter covering Texas A&M issues last year won second place in the Star Reporter of the Year category and the beat writer received first place in that category in both 2010 and 2011.

We highly value our community and our employees, who are compensated with a good benefits package (health insurance/401K) and competitive pay. Send cover letter, clips and resume to Kelly Brown, editor, 1729 Briarcrest Drive, Bryan, 77802 or e- mail her at No phone calls please.
