Description:

                 EDITOR, THE SEXES

The Atlantic is looking for an editor to oversee a new channel on its website devoted to the intersection of work and family. Regular areas of coverage include work-life balance, parenting, gender issues, and family economics – with a special focus on how women are navigating their careers as they juggle roles of mother, daughter, and wife.

These topics have long been core to the Atlantic's print coverage. In the last few years, the magazine has published major stories on marriage, singlehood, child-rearing, the end of men, divorce, aging parents, and, most recently, the blockbuster “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” by Anne-Marie Slaughter. Now is the opportunity to bring this conversation to our website in a purposeful, sophisticated, and sustained way.

Job duties include writing posts for the channel; recruiting writers; commissioning and editing staff and outside pieces; overseeing a freelance budget; selecting and sizing photos; crafting headlines that can work in both social and SEO contexts.

The ideal candidate is a writer and editor with substantial experience in digital media and a demonstrated passion for the subject. The most

important journalistic qualities are intelligence, creativity, and entrepreneurialism. The candidate should have presence in social media, experience managing people and process, and the ability to work quickly and accurately. A curious mind and an interest in being collaborative are essential.

This is a full-time job, ideally located at our headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Core Attributes:

·   Atlantic Media recruits for two personal attributes in its candidates. The first is force of intellect -- reflected in discipline and rigor of thought as manifested, often, in exceptional academic performance. The second is a personal spirit of generosity -- a natural disposition towards service and selfless conduct.

·    Adaptable and willing to approach tasks with velocity and a high metabolism.
