Description: The Tennessean, a Gannett-owned company, seeks a business writer to cover the music and entertainment industry in Nashville, home to major record labels, luminaries of country and Christian music and even a few rockers. Everyone from Dolly Parton to Jack White and Kid Rock have cribs here, and the city is home to national associations such as BMI, and recording studios that produce music of every genre. This reporter will be expected to follow the money, dissect the marketing strategies and explain the industry’s evolving technology as artists, publishers, media companies and independent musicians try to sell their wares to a public less willing to pay top dollar for the tunes they download. The idea is to zero in on how performers, record labels, songwriters, publishers and media companies make money; and to dig deep into how tech companies are changing how consumers get and pay for entertainment. Applicants should have at least five years of reporting experience with preference given to those experienced in covering the music industry and the technology reshaping it. An ability to operate across multiple platforms and layer coverage with vibrant digital elements is a necessity. The ability to use a smartphone to aid in reporting and to shoot/edit videos will be another important factor. Applicants should be knowledgeable about legal issues affecting the music business and intellectual property rights. To apply, email a cover letter, resume, five to seven work samples, including multimedia work, to Managing Editor Meg Downey at mdowney@tennessean.com.
