Yahoo! Homepage Content Editor Job Description

We're looking for a creative and versatile contract editor to help program Yahoo!’s homepage. You will produce and program exciting, intelligent and relevant content for the largest audience on the Web. The ideal candidate will have a feel for what works on the Web, along with a thorough grasp of the competitive landscape and a passion for news, sports, entertainment, and popular culture. You should be able to spot the top “water cooler” story from a diverse field of choices, as well as react to breaking news. You should also have experience evaluating and packaging news, sports, entertainment, lifestyles and video content, and be able to surface top quality features from the Yahoo! network. You are flexible, quick-thinking, energetic, efficient, and able to work independently under pressure while maintaining attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills are a must, as this position requires interacting with fellow producers and employees throughout Yahoo! Time management skills are critical, as is content management system experience and online production and publishing knowledge. This editor must be available for weekend work and work that falls outside of traditional office hours, as the week-to-week schedule can vary significantly. For work during traditional office hours, the editor will work alongside the rest of the media staff in Yahoo!'s Sunnyvale office.


- Updating Yahoo!’s homepage with fresh, compelling content
- Crafting clever headlines and choosing and cropping appropriate images in a deadline-driven environment
- Understanding the Yahoo! audience and its interests
- Fielding pitches and pro-actively packaging material from the Yahoo! network
- Managing competing priorities


- A minimum of five years work experience in a dynamic online editorial environment and a solid grounding in the basic principles of Web packaging, editing and writing
- Excellent news judgment

-Thorough understanding of Photoshop and photo editing best practices
- Demonstrable headline writing and image selection skills
- Basic HTML skills and experience with online publishing tools
- B.A. required, preferably in journalism or media
