Description:

We’re seeking an enthusiastic, hard-working digital journalist to join our web team in the fast-paced, dynamic environment of NBC4 Southern California.

This is a full-time (40 hours a week) freelance position on the overnight shift, available immediately. The job is located in the state-of-the-art Brokaw News Center at Universal Studios.

After an initial training period, the hours will be Monday - Friday 11:30 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.  If this shift does not appeal to you please do not apply.

This highly collaborative position requires great people sklls, excellent reporting, writing and editing skills, as well as a passion for multi-platform journalism and social media.  Experience with content management systems and social media as a reporting and engagement tool are important. Must have a minimum of three years of journalism experience in the Los Angeles area.

Qualified applicants will be required to take a three-hour writing test as part of the application process.

Essential Responsibilities:

-Primarily responsible for reporting and writing original web stories for the NBC4 Southern California website in the fast-paced, dynamic newsroom environment
-Report, write, edit and produce content, and work closely with management, editorial staff and reporters
-Use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+ and other social media tools to report and to engage our audience
-Edit broadcast video for the web
-Edit and enrich broadcast scripts for web publication
-Monitor all local news sites to ensure our site is competitive

Qualifications/Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

-Minimum 3 years of journalism experience
-Experience using social media as a reporting and engagement tool
-Proven ability to report, write, edit and produce content under heavy deadline pressure without compromising accuracy or credibility
-Highly developed news judgment
-Strong writing and editing skills
-Knowledge of AP style


Eligibility Requirements:

-Must be willing to work in Universal City, CA
-Must be able to work overnights and holidays
-Must be willing to submit to a background investigation
-Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States

Desired:

-Basic understanding and demonstration of solid editorial judgment and journalistic ethics, including a current knowledge of laws of libel, slander and applicable FCC rules and regulations
-Video editing skills

-Experience in Los Angeles market and familiarity with Southern California audience and communities
-Good collaborative and interpersonal skills to communicate at all levels
-Understanding of emerging news production techniques and technology
-Works well in a team environment
