Job ID: 1280903

Mid-sized Pulitzer Prize-winning daily is seeking a tenacious reporter to cover the variety of issues that affect animal welfare.  This would include, but is not limited to, reporting on animal cruelty cases, animal rescue organizations, the local dog warden and local humane society.  Stories will range from the pitbull controversy to feral cats to no-kill shelters to neglected animals.  Review of the local policies and practices of the dog warden's office and the humane society, as well as monitoring of shelter decisions that relate to determining which animals are euthanized will be part of your routine.  Experience in county government reporting, work with a veterinarian's office, a humane society or an animal rescue group is preferred.  In the hands of a great reporter and solid writer, you could turn this beat into community journalism at its finest.
