The award-winning Highlander, which publishes twice a week but posts to its website whenever news breaks 24/7, needs an energetic assistant editor to help make sure our newspaper always remains the primary source for local news and information.

The assistant editor is responsible for The Highlander’s news content, directly supervising two news reporters, as well as working with our editor/reporters at our other papers in the area. The position also is responsible for coordinating our weekly magazine, Lake Country Life, a publication of things to do and see in the Highland Lakes.

Candidates must be organized self-starters who understand community journalism, meet deadlines, and understand the necessity of balance, accuracy and clear writing. Position requires strong editing skills, a team-builder attitude and the ability to work with our design team to build appealing news pages. Candidates must be able to cover hard news as well as craft a well-written feature while supervising the staff. It is not unusual for the community editor to jump in and shoot photographs or use a video camera. In this position, you do what’s needed whenever it’s needed and take pride in your work.

Please send resume and samples of your work to Phil Schoch, Executive Editor, Highland Lakes Newspapers at

Candidates must be willing to travel to our home office in Marble Falls if an interview is warranted. We also publish newspapers in Burnet and Llano and the three papers work together on many assignments. We expect our employees to relocate to Burnet or Llano County prior to their start date.
