The Idaho Mountain Express, which publishes an award-winning quarterly lifestyle magazine called the Sun Valley Guide, is looking for an experienced, versatile editor and reporter to be the editor of the magazine and to contribute to our twice-weekly newspaper.

This is a 36-hours-per-week position in the beautiful Ketchum/Sun Valley resort area, in the mountains of south-central Idaho. 

The magazine editor is responsible for producing the Sun Valley Guide's four issues (winter, summer, Best of the Valley and Habitat), as well as select special sections for the Idaho Mountain Express, including Valley Man, Valley Woman and Valley Pets. The position also requires contributing 1-2 business/feature articles a week to the newspaper.


The successful candidate will be a multi-talented editor and writer dedicated to maintaining the highest standards in magazine and newspaper journalism. He/she will have the skills, temperament and experience to oversee the production, photography, writing and editing of the Sun Valley Guide magazine, and other Express Publishing editorial projects. Responsibilities include but are not limited to conceiving story ideas, assigning writers, assigning photo shoots, managing an annual budget, managing freelance contracts, selecting images for publication and writing business articles.


Our ideal person must be a creative, ambitious self-starter who will innovate and shape the future of our magazine properties. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal communication skills, superb editing skills, a college degree and at least five years of print journalism experience, three of those in a senior editorial role.


The position will manage an editorial budget, editorial lineups, a small staff and freelance team.The ideal candidate is a motivated team leader who has superb time management skills and is a top-notch writer and editor with an entertaining yet sophisticated voice. Candidates should be well-versed in AP style and have ample experience overseeing all aspects of magazine editorial production, as well as reporting and writing. This is very much a hands-on position. Candidates should be located in the Wood River Valley or be willing to relocate at their own expense. Only qualified candidates will be contacted.


Job Requirements



• Plans the content for each publication, with the ability to juggle multiple issues under development at any given time.

• Engages writers (including freelancers and staff).

• Enforces multiple deadlines.

• Ensures quality and accuracy of submissions and all content in each issue.

• Collaborates with Art Director to plan the cover, inside artwork and layout for each publication.

• Engages in other projects as assigned.

• 3 years of relevant experience.

• Experience with Adobe products (Photoshop, InDesign, InCopy).

• An ability to work on deadline, efficiently, and under pressure.

• Great short-form writing and headline skills.
