Description:

The Juneau Empire seeks a tech-savvy, hard-working State Government Reporter with an eye for the story and a taste for high-interest investigative reporting. The ideal candidate will have state government reporting experience for a daily paper, knowledge of the principles of open meetings and open records laws and database and investigative reporting skills.
Attending state legislative meetings is part of the job, but the candidate we're looking for will go beyond just regurgitating quotes — we want a watchdog looking to use his or her investigative and enterprising reporting skills to inform Alaskans about how their government’s decisions affect daily life.
Photography and video skills are highly desired, as is a familiarity with maintaining a news blog and great overall communications skills.
The reporter, via social media and our website, must update developments in high-profile events while the traditional news story is being written.
This beat also covers the state university system.
The Empire is an award-winning daily located in the heart of the Tongass National Forest in Alaska’s third largest city. Juneau not only offers exciting news opportunities, it features year-round recreational opportunities, world-class salmon fishing, winter skiing and the best scenery this side of heaven. Living in Alaska isn't for everyone — only the bold need apply. If you seek adventure, have a courageous spirit and desire to work in an open, collaborative environment with other professionals, this is the place for you. The Juneau Empire is owned by Morris Communications Co. and is part of Morris Publishing Group. The position offers competitive wages, full benefits, paid holidays and paid vacation time. E-mail a cover letter, links to three to five clips, professional references and a one-page resume to john.moses@juneauempire.com.
This job is high profile in our community, so we expect a standard of conduct inside and outside the office that reflects Morris’ key goals and standards of moral and professional conduct.
The Juneau Empire is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is a drug-free workplace.  Applicants considered for employment must pass a mandatory pre-employment drug screening.
