The Juneau Empire seeks a tech-savvy, hard-working State Government Reporter with an eye for the story and a taste for high-interest investigative reporting. The ideal candidate will have state government reporting experience for a daily paper, knowledge of the principles of open meetings and open records laws and database and investigative reporting skills.
Attending state legislative meetings is part of the job, but the candidate we're looking for will go beyond just regurgitating quotes — we want a watchdog looking to use his or her investigative and enterprising reporting skills to inform Alaskans about how their government’s decisions affect daily life.
Photography and video skills are highly desired, as is a familiarity with maintaining a news blog and great overall communications skills.
The reporter, via social media and our website, must update developments in high-profile events while the traditional news story is being written.
This beat also covers the state university system.
