Yankee Connects You to New England:  Magazine - Tablet - Digital - Social – Events – TV ION SUMMARY: Responsible for fact-checking features and departments for Yankee’s six bi-monthly issues. In addition, works with editor, managing editor, and senior editors on a range of research projects that may enhance features or develop into future stories.  Serve as the “gatekeeper” for editorial story queries, as well as first reader of unsolicited manuscripts, and be responsible for communicating with writers about the status of their inquiries. Work closely with managing editor on proof reading Yankee’s six annual issues, as well as proof reading custom publishing projects, as well as materials from other departments at Yankee Publishing.  Compile “Calendar of events” and “well worth the drives” for each issue. Write departmental features like “Up Close” if needed, as well as write for custom publications.  Contribute to Yankee’s digital presence with occasional travel blogs, as well as proof reading blogs from online contributors.  Maintain accurate two years advance story list for editorial planning.

SCOPE: As the lead fact checker is responsible for researching and verifying the facts presented in features and departments.  This involves communicating with writers and subjects mentioned in the stories. Needs to have the sensitivity to a writer’s intent and judgment about how and when to modify statements and quotes.  Will be a full participant in Yankee editorial meetings and planning. Will have opportunities, as time permits, to write selected stories for Yankee, custom publications, as well as Yankee’s digital platforms.  Works closely with managing editor on proof reading, and copy –editing when needed.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in liberal arts field; minimum 34- years experience in editorial field; alive with curiosity about how stories are developed, and a thirst for researching new subjects; strong copy-editing and proofreading skills; competence and confident with computer software and web technology. A flair for writing clear and lively copy. Comfortable exchanging ideas, and comfortable in a deadline driven publication environment.  Familiarity with New England geography, history and culture a plus. Knowledge of Yankee Magazine’s story sense and sensibility a plus. Familiarity with InDesign a plus. Competence with photography a plus. Some travel may be required when writing stories.
